The capital of the Netherlands is renowned for its tolerance of sex, drugs and seediness, but there’s so much more to Amsterdam than British stag dos and the Red Light District.

The city is steeped in artistic heritage and culture and makes for the perfect weekend break for those on a budget and those with cash to splash.

Amsterdam is famous for its complex canal system and we recommend taking a boat tour to see the gabled houses and flower-lined waterfront up close. Hop on a bike and head to the Jewish Quarter for the Waterlooplein Flea Market and beautiful botanical gardens, or Jordaan for hip galleries and trendy boutiques. Amsterdam is brimming with museums, and no visit is complete without a visit to the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum – make sure you book in advance to beat the queues.

From high-end hotels to cheery hostels, there is accommodation available to suit every budget. Restaurants cover every cuisine and if you’re looking for the quintessential hedonistic Amsterdam experience, the coffeeshops have you covered.

Amsterdam is vibrant but we know that it’s relaxed and laid-back attitude will no doubt draw you in and leave you wanting more.
